Kim Do-gyun, who led the retention of Suwon FC, takes over the baton of Seoul E-Land

Coach Kim Do-gyun (46), who led the dramatic retention of Suwon FC in the K-League 1 professional soccer league, will take charge of Seoul E-Land in the K-League 2.

According to an official familiar with the K-League situation on the 12th, coach Kim Do-gyun and Seoul E-Land recently agreed on a contract. If no major variables arise in the future, Coach Kim's appointment as head coach of Seoul E-Land will be officially announced within a few days.

Seoul E-Land, founded in 2014 and competing in the K-League Challenge (now K-League 2) since the 2015 season, is challenging promotion every season, but has not been able to advance to the K-League 1 stage for the 9th season. The first coach, Martin Rennie, as well as coaches Park Geon-ha, Kim Byeong-soo, and Jeong Jeong-yong took the helm, but failed to be promoted each time. This season, under coach Park Chung-gyun, their ranking fell to 11th place in K League 2, and they ultimately chose to part ways with coach Park after one year.

The desperate Seoul E-Land club began preparations for the new season early, searched for a coach with experience in promotion to K League 1, and selected coach Kim Do-gyun as a candidate for the new head coach. Coach Kim previously had experience leading Suwon FC to promotion in 2020. This is the first time in the history of Seoul E-Land that the baton has been handed over to a manager with promotion experience. It is expected that he will take the helm of Seoul E-Land once the remaining one year contract between coach Kim Do-gyun and Suwon FC is concluded.

Coach Kim Do-gyun, who is expected to be the new coach of Seoul E-Land, has coached Seonam University, Ulsan Hyundai Middle School (U-15 team), and Ulsan Hyundai since his retirement as a player, and has taken over the baton of Suwon FC since 2020. In his first year in office, he led the team to second place in K League 2 and promoted them to the K League 1 stage, and then led them to remain in K League 1 for three consecutive seasons starting in 2021.

In particular, following the sensational performance of the promoted team by placing 5th in K League 1 in the first year of promotion, they ranked 7th last season and succeeded in a soft landing on the K League 1 stage after promotion. Even though he conceded many goals, he was well received by Suwon FC and K League fans for his aggressive soccer. This season, their ranking fell to 11th place in K-League 1 and they were in danger of relegation, but in the second leg of the promotion playoff (PO) against Busan I'Park, they led a 5-2 comeback victory after a fierce overtime battle and led a dramatic retention.

Coach Kim Do-gyun, who shed tears on the pitch after leading Suwon FC to remain, said, “I thought I had to endure the three years (after taking office) well. His third season proved to be his most difficult. In fact, I thought throughout the season, ‘Suwon FC can’t continue like this.’ The players are getting older and their mobility is decreasing. “I think there needs to be a lot of change one way or another,” he said.

He continued, “We need to look back on the things that weren’t good and make up for them. Suwon FC is not in a position to spend a lot of money to recruit players. As Director Choi Soon-ho believes, nurturing young players is a necessary method in the long term. In any case, we must continue to survive in Division 1 while simultaneously growing. “I think it takes a lot of thought and effort to stay in the first division and create a team that can compete,” he said in an interview that seemed to hint at a breakup with Suwon FC. And after actually leading Suwon FC to the first division, coach Kim took over the baton of K-League 2 Seoul E-Land and started a new start as a leader.
