Will Dortmund's 'legendary' defender Kim Min-jae become a backup?

British media 'Goal.com' reported on the 17th (Korean time) that 'Former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has rejected a move to Real Betis and hopes to join Bayern Munich.'

Sokratis is an extremely aggressive player as a Greek defender. Although he is a center back, he has quick feet that can be used by right backs as well, so his defensive radius is quite wide and he is strong in one-on-one defense based on his physicality and athletic ability.

He joined Dortmund in 2013 and played as a starting player until 2018, establishing himself as the team's key defender. In 2013, he performed very well and was ranked 4th in center back rating by the German media 'Kicker'. From the 2015/16 season, he was regarded as a key player by manager Thomas Tuchel and has performed at his best with Hummels.

However, since coach Bosz arrived in the 2017/18 season, his form began to deteriorate rapidly, and as he got older, there were rumors that Dortmund was selling him. In the end, he heads to Arsenal with a record of 10 goals and 2 assists in 198 games.

He served as the leader of Arsenal's defense in the absence of Koscielny and Mertesacker, and played as a single player, performing the most decently among Arsenal's center backs in situations without holding. However, due to his unique playing style, he received a lot of fouls and cards and did not perform well in big games.

However, he began to fall out of the starting position in the 2019/20 season and did not receive good reviews. As he was pushed out by Mustafi and Rob Holding, he disappeared from manager Arteta's plans, and with the arrival of William Saliba and Magalhaengs, his position became increasingly narrow.

Eventually, he transferred to Olympiacos, his country's league, in 2021 and played well, but he has not yet been able to find a team after leaving the team when his contract expired in July 2023.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are looking to sign a central defender after losing Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Licht to long-term injuries. Recently, German media 'Bild' reported that Thomas Tuchel may consider reuniting with Sokratis, whom he previously managed at Dortmund.

According to Florian Plettenberg, a reporter for German media 'Sky Sports', Papastathopoulos recently turned down a transfer to La Liga team Real Betis and is waiting for an offer from Bayern Munich.

Excluding Kim Min-jae, Munich currently has only one central defender in normal condition, which is a very dangerous situation. If Sokratis shows advanced play as a backup defender, signing him would not be a bad option for Munich.
