Son Heung-min ‘League’s 7th goal + 1 assist’ one-man show…

Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur) performed a 'one-man show' with 1 goal and 1 assist, rising to a tie for second place in scoring in the English Professional Football Premier League (EPL).

Son Heung-min was involved in both of the team's goals in the home game against Fulham FC in the 9th round of the 2023-2024 EPL held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England on the 24th (Korean time). Tottenham defeated Fulham 2-0 and continued their undefeated streak of 9 consecutive games since the start of this season (7 wins, 2 draws, 23 points). They beat Manchester City (7 wins, 2 losses, 21 points) and regained the league lead.

On this day, Son Heung-min played as a frontline striker and scored the first goal in the 36th minute of the first half. Van der Pen blocked the Fulham attack and cleared the ball to Richarlison, who passed it to Son Heung-min. Son Heung-min bypassed the opposing defender from the front of the penalty arc and fired a unique right-foot curling shot, and the ball went straight into the upper right corner of the goal.

In the 9th minute of the second half, Son Heung-min assisted new ‘best friend’ James Madison’s goal. Hojbjerg, who intercepted the ball with strong forward pressure, passed it to Son Heung-min in front of the penalty box, and Son Heung-min connected to Maddison rushing in from the left, creating a perfect opportunity. Madison, who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, calmly scored to widen the gap to 2-0.

Afterwards, Fulham's offensive continued, but Tottenham held on without conceding a goal and won by two goals.

Son Heung-min, who scored a goal in the national team international match against Vietnam on the 17th, scored his first assist of the season as soon as he returned to his team Tottenham. Son Heung-min, who scored his 7th league goal, is again tied for 2nd place in EPL scoring along with Muhammad Salah (Liverpool FC). The gap with top scorer Erling Holland (9 goals, Manchester City) was narrowed to 2 goals, sparking a competition for the top scorer. Son Heung-min became the first EPL Asian player to score top score (23 goals) in the 2021-2022 season.

Son Heung-min's total EPL goals also increased to 110. He surpassed the 'legend' Ryan Giggs (109 goals) on the career scoring list and ranked 26th, the same as Emile Heskey.

He also set a new milestone by scoring 50 goals in his career at his home stadium, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium alone. This is the 3rd highest scorer in a single stadium in the EPL, following Salah, who scored 65 goals at Anfield, and Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), who also scored 62 goals at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son Heung-min, who returned Tottenham to the leading position with his brilliant performance, also swept the top rankings in various media outlets. Soccer statistics sites Whoscored.com and SofaScore gave Son Heung-min the highest rating of 8.9 among both teams, and FootMob gave him 8.7 points. Football London and Sky Sports recognized the best performance of the day by giving a rating of 9.

Son Heung-min was also selected as the best player of the game, ‘Man of the Match (MOM)’. He received 59% of the fan votes (38,608 votes) conducted on the EPL website and was selected as MOM for the third time in the season. Son Heung-min was selected as Man of the Match in the 4th round match against Burnley FC and the 7th round match against Liverpool.

Son Heung-min, who is showing a new side as a striker this season after Kane's transfer, said in a post-game interview, “Every position in soccer is difficult. Still, he gave credit to his colleagues, saying, “It is a position I have been familiar with since I was young, and it is a position I played even when I advanced to Germany,” adding, “Thanks to the help of my colleagues, including Madison, I am handling the striker position with much ease.” He went on to emphasize that “I will be faithful to the role the team wants.”
