Choi Seong-won, who returned to his parents’ home after a long time

Choi Seong-won (29, 184cm), who finished his first season after transferring to Anyang Jeong Gwan-jang, visited Jamsil Student Gymnasium for a long time to watch his former teammates in action.

The second game of the 2023-2024 CheongKwanJang Professional Basketball Round of 6 playoffs between Seoul SK and Busan KCC was held at Jamsil Student Gymnasium on the 6th. I could see some happy faces in the audience. While a large number of basketball figures, including men's national team coach Ahn Jun-ho and Goyang Sono coach Kim Seung-gi, visited the site, Choi Seong-won also watched the game.

For Choi Seong-won, SK is his hometown. He was selected in the second round, third overall, in the 2017 rookie draft, and became a key force following the 2019-2020 season, when he won the Sixth Man Award. Choi Seong-won, who continued to grow, played an average of 26 minutes and 30 seconds in 36 games last season after being discharged from the military, averaging 6.9 points, 1.7 3-point shots, and 1.9 assists. He still had excellent defensive skills from the 5th defense team (2019-2020 season).

SK fans who recognized Choi Seong-won also greeted him warmly, while others asked to take pictures. Choi Seong-won said, “SK is a team I have played for for a long time. There are many close players, including (Ahn) Young-jun and (Oh) Jae-hyeon. There is also an older brother (Choi) Jun-yong at KCC. “I came because there are many players to cheer for,” he said.

It was also impressive that he had a hairstyle similar to Choi Jun-yong. When asked about this, Choi Seong-won said, “I grew out my hair on the back of my head first, and Junyong said something. “But now I’m following along,” he said with a laugh.

Choi Seong-won qualified as a free agent at the end of last season and signed with Jeong Kwan-Jang for a three-year contract and a compensation of 400 million won. Choi Seong-won, who was given a larger role in the offense, played an average of 28 minutes and 51 seconds in 49 games this season, averaging 11.5 points, 2.1 3-point shots, and 4.1 assists. His average playing time only increased by 2 minutes and 21 seconds, but his points and assists roughly doubled.

Choi Seong-won said, “At the beginning of the season, the team showed competitiveness by rising to second place, but suddenly there were many injured players. Although he had some difficulties playing in the EASL (East Asian Super League), he does not think that the domestic players are weak. “It was a disappointing season due to injuries,” he said. In fact, Cheong Kwan-Jang ranked 9th in the regular league, but placed 3rd in the EASL Final Four and won $250,000 (about 330 million won) in prize money.

Choi Seong-won also commented on the performance shown in his first season after the transfer, saying, “Not only foreign players but also domestic players were injured a lot, so there was not much time to practice as a full team. That part is even more disappointing since many players came from outside. Still, I think he showed competitiveness in more areas than when he was at SK. Although I didn't show everything perfectly, I did step up. I didn’t transfer after only seeing one season. I think we can continue to grow over the next three years. “We can fully show that we can do better in the future,” he said.

Choi Seong-won ended the season early due to an elbow injury. He missed the last two games of the regular season. When asked about his physical condition, Choi Seong-won said, “I am focusing on treatment to recover quickly. I plan to start individual exercise as soon as possible as I need to show better performance next season. “I think I will be able to exercise starting in May,” he said.
