Should the Mets reach out to Ryu Hyun-jin? Give up your interest in Imana

The New York Mets of the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) withdrew from the race to recruit Japanese pitcher Shota Imanaga (31). Attention is focused on whether he will reach out to Ryu Hyun-jin (37), who has been consistently mentioned as the Mets' main target.

Jim Bowden, a columnist and former MLB general manager, said on his personal social network service (SNS) on the 6th, "According to sources, the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, LA Angels, and San Francisco Giants are the final candidates in the Imana recruitment battle."

Imanaga, who debuted in Japanese professional baseball in 2016, played for the Yokohama DeNA Baystars for eight seasons, recording a total of 162 games, 64 wins, 49 losses, and an ERA of 3.19. Last season, he pitched in 19 games, pitched 128 innings, and went 7-3 with an ERA of 2.81.

Imanaga also demonstrated his skills in international competitions. He participated in the 2019 Premier 12 and the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) and contributed to Japan's victory. In particular, he appeared as a relief pitcher against Korea in the WBC and allowed 1 run in 3 innings, and in the final against the United States, he appeared as a starter and allowed 1 run in 2 innings.

The Mets and New York Yankees, who initially showed interest in Imanaga, withdrew from the recruitment campaign. The Mets have pitchers Luis Severino and Adrian Houser this winter, but are still looking to recruit additional starting pitchers. After losing Yoshinobu Yamamoto (LA Dodgers), the possibility of recruiting Ryu Hyun-jin became greater as interest in Imanaga ceased.

Local American media outlets are selecting the Mets as a suitable destination for Ryu Hyun-jin. MLB's official website, MLB.com, mentioned Ryu Hyun-jin as a candidate for free agent (FA) who could sign a one- or two-year contract. SNY, a New York-area media outlet, was the first to mention Ryu Hyun-jin's name as a starting pitcher that the Mets should consider recruiting.

Ryu Hyun-jin, who signed a four-year contract worth $80 million (about 103.9 billion won) with Toronto after the end of the 2019 season, gained free agency status again after finishing last season.
