Seattle's 'Trader Jerry' who is not afraid of trade

Manager Jack McKeon (93) led the Florida Marlins to the top of the World Series in 2003. He was the oldest winning manager at the time, aged 72. This record was broken by Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker in 2022. 73 years old.

McKeon served as general manager of the San Diego Padres in 1980. At this time he was 49 years old. As the team entered rebuilding mode in the offseason, he traded at a frantic pace. That's why he was nicknamed 'Trader Jack'. Even his son-in-law (Greg Booker) was traded in 1989. However, SD advanced to the World Series for the first time in the club's history in 1984 while McKeon was GM.

He asked the New York Times in 1989, “Why trade? I am aggressive. I have confidence. I am a gambler. “I’m willing to trade and I’m not afraid of getting hit,” he said, expressing his thoughts on the trade.

Now, 40 years later, the second 'Trader Jack' is Jerry Dipoto (55), President of Seattle Mariners Baseball Operations. Dipoto made two trades with the SF Giants and Tampa Bay Rays on the 6th (Korean time).

The Giants gave Cy Young pitcher Robbie Ray in exchange for outfielder Mitch Haniger and right-hander Anthony Descalafani. He also receives $6 million in cash from the Giants. Ray will only be able to pitch in the second half of this year after undergoing elbow ligament fusion surgery in May of last year.

Next, a 1-for-1 trade was made with Tampa Bay in exchange for outfielder Luke Lalli and infielder Jose Cavalleyo.

Hanniger is returning to his hometown through this trade. He showed great performance by recording 100 RBIs in 5 seasons in Seattle. He became a free agent after the 2022 season and signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the Giants. However, his performance was poor, with a batting average of 0.209-6 and -28 home runs and -28 RBI in 61 appearances.

Left-hander Ray (32), traded to the Giants, won the Cy Young Award with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021. Dipoto signed free agent Ray to a five-year, $115 million contract. In the first year of his contract in 2022, he went 12 wins, 12 losses, and 3.71, leading the team to a postseason berth. However, he left the line in the 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Seattle has eight trades after the 2023 season. The Atlanta Braves have the most with 9. Atlanta and Seattle did a 2-3 trade on December 3 last year.

Dipoto, a former major league bullpen pitcher, took office as Seattle general manager on August 28, 2015. He has now been promoted and is President of Operations.

Dipoto, who was responsible for managing the Seattle team, made a total of 162 solo trades as of today. Naturally, he is also given the nickname ‘Trader Jerry’. He had some successful trades, but he also had many failed and unnecessary trades.

Seattle, founded in 1977, is the only team among the 30 MLB teams that has never played in the World Series. During Dipoto's tenure, the team advanced to the postseason once in 2022. It was a great achievement 21 years after 2001. In the 2023 season, they competed until the very end, but were frustrated with 88 wins and 74 losses.

It will be interesting to see if ‘Trader Jerry’ will be able to play in the World Series during his tenure in Seattle.
