Suwon’s problems all came out from the legend’s mouth.

Stingy investment and failure to recruit players. Suwon Samsung's problems were all revealed from the mouth of the team legend. But it was already too late. Now it has become Suwon of ‘K League 2’.

Suwon drew 0-0 in the final match of Hana One Q K League 1 2023 against Gangwon FC held at Suwon World Cup Stadium on the 2nd. They failed to bring in 3 points to escape 12th place. The match between Suwon FC and Jeju United held at the same time also ended 1-1, confirming Suwon's relegation.

The person responsible for Suwon's relegation on the spot was the team's legendary acting manager Ki-Hoon Yeom. A former member of the national team, he joined Suwon in 2010 and has been playing at Big Bird (Suwon World Cup Stadium) for 13 seasons. As stars of his age took off their uniforms one by one, he took the baton to save the team in crisis. But there was no twist. Suwon received a report card of 12th place, down from 10th place last year.

Suwon Acting Manager Ki-Hoon Yeom, who entered the press conference room after the game, could not open his mouth for a while. Soon he said, “I am so sorry to my fans that I cannot raise my head.”

On this day, the reporters asked Acting Manager Ki-Hoon Yeom to ‘please name the factors leading to the demotion.’ He said, “It’s not enough to pick one or two things here,” but “I think the biggest thing is that too many changes have occurred in the players. “The many changes within the team must have confused and made it difficult for the players.”

This is interpreted to mean that frequent changes in leadership and player recruitment issues had a negative impact. Suwon has gone through as many as four head coaches (including acting head coach) this season alone. Coach Lee Byung-geun, who prepared for the season together, packed his bags in April, and even coach Kim Byeong-soo resigned from his position after four months. The players recruited by each head coach were lost, and no one was able to save the team.

Acting coach Yeom Gi-hoon, the 'legend' who took the helm for the last time, raised a spark of hope by succeeding in two consecutive wins for the second time in the season, but in the end, the result was the team's relegation at his own hands.

When asked to compare it to 13 years ago when he joined Big Bird, he said, “It is true that things have gotten a lot worse. He also thinks, 'If only there were better players worth the name on the team.' “But our players did their best.” This statement is similar to what Acting Director Choi Seong-yong said eight months ago. At the time, former acting coach Choi admitted that he had failed to form a team early on after losing in the super match against FC Seoul, saying, “It would be good to have outstanding representative players and foreign players, but these are the only people we can use.” .

Suwon, whose investment has decreased significantly since the mid-2010s, has maintained a middle rank in the K-League team salary rankings. As other competing teams rushed to increase spending, they were busy maintaining the status quo. However, it wasn't a wise purchase. Although renowned players such as Kim Bo-kyung, Mulic, and Acosti were recruited, it was difficult for them to be of help to the team due to their ups and downs. Kazuki, who joined in the summer, missed the last two games due to a red card, and Werikpopo finished the season without a goal.

Lastly, it has not yet been decided whether acting director Ki-Hoon Yeom, who has completed his mission, will accompany Suwon. Nevertheless, he said, “I tried to retire last year, but this year I became a playing coach, but I have no regrets about my choice. I really tried to do my best for Suwon. Although I will be retiring in a bad situation, I will continue to love and support Suwon even more in the future. “I plan to help where I can and support the team so that it can do better,” he said, expressing his unwavering affection.
