NYY accepts rival Boston's left-handed hitter Alex Verde - what about Lee Jeong-hoo?

Major League Baseball's greatest rivals, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, engaged in a trade. This is a trade that also affects Jeong-hoo Lee in the post.

The Yankees traded three pitchers, including prospects Richard Pitts (ranked 12th), Greg Wysert, and Nicholas Giudice, to Boston in exchange for left-handed hitter Alex Verdugo (27).

Outfielder Verdugo recorded a batting average of 0.264, an on-base percentage of 0.324, and a slugging percentage of 0.421, with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs this year. He will become a free agent after the 2024 season.

The two teams are rivals, and this is only the eighth trade in history since MLB was divided into divisions in 1969.

The recruitment of Verdugo is aimed at relieving the absence of a left-handed hitter. The reason Lee Jeong-hoo's move to the Yankees was often mentioned is because he is a left-handed hitter. The reason Juan Soto, who will become a free agent after the 2024 season, is constantly being traded to the Yankees is in order to strengthen scoring production in the left-handed batting line.

The Yankees' main force is the right-handed lineup, including home run king Aaron Judge and designated hitter John Carlo Stanton. First baseman and left-handed hitter Anthony Rizzo performed poorly this year due to injuries. In the 2022 season, he produced 32 home runs and 75 RBIs, but this year he only hit 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 99 games.

The absence of left-handed scoring is reflected in the records. Left-handed hitters rank 29th in MLB with 1,285 at-bats. With a batting average of 0.220 and an on-base percentage of 0.298, he is also ranked 29th. He ranked 24th with a slugging percentage of 0.391.

With Verdugo's joining the Yankees, the possibility of Lee Jung-hoo signing a contract has decreased. If Soto is brought in, his trip to the Yankees will only end as a rumor. San Diego Padres GM AJ Fleurer is demanding too many players as a condition of the Soto trade, so negotiations are not going smoothly.

Verdugo was a prospect for the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, he switched to Boston during the Mookie Betts trade in 2020. He played four seasons in Boston before donning Yankees pinstripes. Verdugo is a mid-range hitter rather than a power hitter. The most home runs in a season since full-time in 2019 is 13.
